A DVD I ordered turned out to be a Blue Ray. Instead of returning it, I thought why not go with the times and get one of these blue ray player thingies? What is there to know? How cheap can you go without getting useless garbage? It won’t get used very often (5-6 times a year) as I mostly stream video, so I don’t care how long it lasts.

Worse comes to worse just try and find a cheap old PS3. They have built in Blu-Ray players.

I bought a Sony BR player off Amazon a few years ago for like $50. Like you, I hardly use mine. But when I do, it works every single time.
Just bear in mind that there are now two types of Blu Ray. Regular and UHD. UHD-capable Blu Ray players can play both, but non-UHD models can only play non-UHD (lower resolution) discs. Either should be able to play DVD’s at an upscaled resolution just fine.

If you have a spare 5.25" slot in your computer, you could possibly buy a Blu-ray drive for it and watch Blu-rays on your PC. The cheapest Blu-ray reader I found for a PC is an LG unit going for about $45.
Alternatively find a USB one, if you still want to go the PC route.
As for a standard player, decent refurbed units run about $35-40 on Amazon. I dug around for a little bit, here’s a Sony unit .

I don’t know much about Blu-ray players, but I recently upgraded when my 15 yr old DVD player crapped out. I grabbed a Samsung player without doing much research, and it plays fine but I don’t like the capacitive touch buttons on it. I miss tactile feedback.

+2 Exactly what I did, not too expensive, can play blue ray, and can stream all of the regular services, plus I can play games.

Only problem with PS3 (I think mine is an early model so YMMV) is a rather noisy fan.
